Prevent Duty

What is the PREVENT Duty?

‘Prevent’ relates to the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 which came into force on 1 July 2015. Since 1 July 2015 there has been a duty on schools to have ‘due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism’.

This is called the Prevent duty. Schools are expected to encourage pupils to respect other people with particular regard to the protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010 (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, sex and sexual orientation).

Schools can build pupils’ resilience to radicalisation by promoting fundamental British values and enabling them to challenge extremist views. As with all forms of safeguarding, adults should use their professional judgement in identifying an individual who may be at risk of radicalisation.

What is radicalisation?

“Radicalisation” refers to the process by which a person comes to support terrorism and forms of extremism leading to terrorism. During that process, it is possible to intervene to prevent vulnerable people being drawn into terrorist-related activity.

What is extremism?

‘Vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs’. Being drawn into terrorism includes not only violent extremism but also non-violent extremism.

What are British Values?

‘Democracy, the rule of law, equality of opportunity, freedom of speech and the rights for all men and women to live free from persecution of any kind’.

What are our procedures?

The Trust has clear procedures in place to safeguard children that includes protecting children at risk of radicalisation.

All staff are aware of the Trust policy their own school procedures and follow these for any aspect of safeguarding, including extremist views/extremism.

✨ A faithful shepherd, a courageous missionary and a passionate servant of Christ. ✨

Today we celebrate St Wilfrid, a great missionary bishop and peacemaker. His life was marked by a deep love for Christ, a commitment to the Church and a desire to share the Gospel with all those he encountered.

May St Wilfrid inspire us to be people of courage and faith - ready to proclaim the Good News, stand firm in what is right and serve others with generosity and compassion.

🙏 St Wilfrid, pray for us and guide us in our journey of faith.

💚🌍 WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 🌍💚

Today is an opportunity to pause, check in with ourselves and remember that mental health matters.

Life can be challenging and none of us should feel that we have to face difficult times alone. Sometimes a simple “How are you?”, a listening ear or a little kindness can make a real difference. 💚

🌱 Be kind to yourself.
💬 Talk about how you’re feeling.
👂 Listen without judgement.
🤝 Reach out when you need support.
💚 Look out for one another.

Let’s help create a community where everyone feels seen, heard, valued and supported - today and every day.

✨ It’s okay not to be okay and it’s okay to ask for help.

So inspiring to spend time with Year 1 teachers across NPCAT for Session 1 of our Principles for High Quality Writing training! ✏️✨

This session focused on securing the strong foundations that make early writing possible, starting with "the child in front of us" as pupils transition from EYFS into Year 1.

Key takeaways from our discussions and moderation practice:

🗣️ Communication Foundation: If they can’t say it, they can’t write it—oral rehearsal comes first!

✍️ Transcription Foundation: Automated handwriting and spelling free up crucial cognitive capacity for composition.

🧱 Strong Foundations Framework: Building fluency in sentence construction, dictation, and phonic application step-by-step.

🔍 Formative Moderation: Looking beyond the finished product to identify the specific foundation a child needs next.

Huge credit to all the Year 1 educators involved for their active engagement, brilliant reflections, and dedication to helping every child build confidence as a writer! 🌟👏
